Sport features heavily on our pupils' timetable, along with a wide range of extra curricular clubs and team fixtures. Our varied curriculum includes golf, badminton, swimming, dance, athletics, gymnastics and rugby to name a few.
Our onsite gymnasium provides all pupils with a dedicated indoor space for activities such as climbing on the permanent indoor wall, 5 a side football, badminton, dance and gymnastics. Moorlands pupils from Nursery to Year 6 benefit from weekly lessons in our heated swimming pool and have the chance for extra swimming across the year in both before and after school clubs. Pupils work towards ASA swimming awards and are successful in local friendly galas as well as gaining notable results in regional competitions.
Moorlands has competitive sporting teams from U8 to U11 and we play fixtures against other schools in rugby, netball, football, hockey, rounders and cricket, as well as competing in cross country fixtures and athletics meets. Children can begin to compete for Moorlands from Year 3 and thoroughly enjoy the team spirit and invaluable experiences that come with such fantastic opportunities. Moorlands has a reputation for 'punching above our weight' and this is evident in the weekly sports results gained as well as the sportsmanship observed in our pupils. Moorlands pupils compete in the IAPS sports competitions and have had excellent results in recent gymnastics, swimming and netball competitions.
The highlights of the school year have to be the Foxhill Run, Sports Days and Rounders Fest. We are very lucky to be situated so close to The Hollies, so the older children enjoy a real cross country experience running through these woods. The Foxhill Run sees all children from Nursery to Year 6 competing individually and for their houses in a well-supported and exciting event. Rounders Fest sees parents, pupils, Old Moorlanders and staff coming together to compete for the coveted ‘Golden Bat’ in a thrilling and highly competitive summer’s evening on The Green complete with picnics and icre-cream. Sports Day is a fantastic occasion, when children put their well-practised skills to good use in a competitive environment. Early Years and Key Stage 1 enjoy competing in a range of traditional, fun activities on The Green in front of the school and we even get the parents involved! For Key Stage 2, we use the excellent facilities at Leeds Beckett University, including the running track, long jump pit and throwing area for a fully competitive day, which sees children excelling in their sporting activities.
There is also a healthy amount of competition between the three houses at Moorlands and throughout the year the pupils compete in house events including netball, swimming, rounders and football, not to mention conkers and tug-of-war!
All pupils at Moorlands are encouraged to take part in the activities on offer to them and, with such a a variety available, there is really is something for everyone to enjoy and excel in. This ensures they achieve our objective of having healthy pupils who want to lead active lives beyond school.
